Presidents' Day tourney a success

Twenty teams from California, Utah, Alberta and British Columbia converged on El Segundo’s Toyota Sports Center last weekend to compete in this year’s Los Angeles Jr. Kings-hosted Presidents’ Day Challenge.

Champions were crowned in four divisions - Midget 18U AA, Bantam AA, Pee Wee AA and Mite Track II - with the Jr. Kings’ Mite B1 team winning its bracket.

“It was a fun weekend of hockey with plenty of great competition at every level,” said co-tournament director Brian McDonough. “We received terrific feedback from our out-of-town teams and families, too, who were able to experience and enjoy all the L.A. area has to offer away from the rink.”

The Jr. Kings’ B1 team celebrated the Mite Track II division title after a hard-fought 10-6 triumph over the Jr. Kings’ B3 squad in the championship game.

Other division winners included the California Wave’s 16U AAA team, which won the Midget 18U AA title with a 4-0-1 record, including a 6-2 triumph over the Channel Islands Riptide in the finale; the Utah Jr. Grizzlies, who went a perfect 5-0 in Bantam AA, culminating in a 6-0 shutout over the Riptide in the title game; and the Alaska All-Stars, who captured the Pee Wee AA title with a 5-0 mark, including a 4-2 victory over Jr. Kings 2 in the championship game.

The Jr. Kings' holiday weekend success extended to Las Vegas, where the program's Squirt BB2 team won its divsion's championship at the Kilroy's Presidents' Day showcase after a 3-2 win over the SDIA Oilers in the finale, while its Squirt B squad took home bronze.

The next Jr. Kings-hosted showcase is the highly regarded Carmen Starr Memorial Day Tournament, which will run from May 23-26 at Toyota Sports Center and boasts elite AAA competition from across North America.
