Jr. Kings push on at USA Hockey National Championships

The Los Angeles Jr. Kings finished Day 2 of this year’s USA Hockey Tier I National Championships, which commenced on Thursday, with a 0-2 record.

Led by head coach Jack Bowkus, the Jr. Kings’ 16U AAA Major team fell to 0-2 at its nationals, which is being played at Sharks Ice-San Jose, after dropping a 4-1 decision to the Colorado Thunderbirds.

Forward Nick Castro tallied the Jr. Kings’ lone marker in the first period, with assists from defenseman Lucas Yovitech and forward Noah Lee. Between the pipes, goaltender Jagger Denys turned aside 24 shots.

The 16U team will close pool play with a matchup against Team North Dakota on Saturday (4 p.m. PST).

The Bantam Major squad, guided by head coach Shawn Pitcher, lost to the Boston Jr. Eagles, 2-0, to move to 0-1-0-1 in the standings.

Goaltender Dustin Wolf turned aside 44 shots for the Jr. Kings.

The club will wrap up pool play on Saturday with a game against the Buffalo Jr. Sabres (3 p.m.), which will be contested at Subway Sports Centre in Anchorage, Alaska.

Both Jr. Kings clubs celebrated Pacific District championships earlier this month at El Segundo’s Toyota Sports Center to punch their tickets to nationals.
