Jr. Kings open Tier I states with 5-2 mark

The Los Angeles Jr. Kings went 5-2 on Day 1 of the California Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) Tier I state championships, which are being contested this weekend at The Rinks-Lakewood Ice.

At the 18U AAA level, the Jr. Kings fell to the California Titans, 4-2, and at 16U AAA Major, L.A. downed Orange Country Hockey Club, 7-2.

In the Midget 16U AAA Minor division, the Jr. Kings bested the San Jose Jr. Sharks, 4-3, in the first game of their best-of-three series.

Los Angeles blanked Wildcats Hockey Club, 3-0, in Bantam Major division play, while the Jr. Kings also shut out the Jr. Sharks, 3-0, in their best-of-three Bantam Minor series.

At the Pee Wee level, L.A.’s Minor squad was victorious over the Anaheim Jr. Ducks, 3-1, while its Major team fell to the Jr. Ducks, 2-1, in overtime.

At the conclusion of states, the top two teams in the Midget 18U and Bantam Major brackets will advance to the Pacific District Regional Tournament, which will be contested from March 5-8 at Sharks Ice-San Jose (the Jr. Sharks have auto-bids to districts in the 18U and Bantam Major divisions and don't particpate at states). Only the top team in Midget 16U Major will advance to districts.

In the Midget 18U, 16U Major, Bantam Major and Pee Wee Major divisions, the top four teams in each division in CAHA regular-season play qualify for state playoffs, which for the third year in a row will use a double-elimination format.
