Day 1 at states a success

Both the Los Angeles Jr. Kings’ 18U AAA and 16U AAA 1 teams skated to 2-0 records on Day 1 of the California Amateur Hockey Association state championships, which are being contested this weekend at The Rinks-Lakewood Ice.

The Jr. Kings went 2-0 in the 18U division on Friday after downing the California Titans in their opener, 5-2, then besting the Anaheim Jr. Ducks, 7-1.

The Jr. Kings will play at 5 p.m. on Saturday against the winner of the Ontario Avalanche-Anaheim Jr. Ducks game and a victory would make them state champs.

In the 16U division, Jr. Kings 1 edged the Titans, 2-1, in its opener and followed that up with a 7-0 whitewash of the San Diego Jr. Gulls in Game 2.

With a win in Game 3 at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday against the winner of the Titans-Jr. Gulls game, the Jr. Kings would be crowned state champions at 16U AAA.

Jr. Kings 1 downed Jr. Kings 2 in their Bantam-opener showdown at states. Jr. Kings 1 then fell to the Jr. Ducks, 6-4, in Game 2, and Jr. Kings 2 was eliminated from states after losing to the Jr. Gulls, 2-1 in a shootout, in its second game.

Jr. Kings 1 will tangle with the Jr. Gulls in Game 3, which will commence at 7:15 a.m. on Saturday.

In the Pee Wee division, the Jr. Kings opened states with a 5-0 shutout over the San Jose Jr. Sharks, and fell to Jr. Ducks 1 in Game 2 in double-overtime, 2-1.

The Jr. Kings will face off against the Jr. Sharks in Game 3 at 7 a.m. on Saturday.

The winners of the 18U, 16U and 14U brackets, as well as the runners-up, will advance to the Pacific District Regional Tournament, which will be contested from March 6-9 at Sharks Ice-San Jose.

The top four teams in each division in CAHA regular-season play qualify for state playoffs (in the Bantam AAA division, the Jr. Sharks, who finished third in the regular season, earn an automatic bye to regionals as hosts), which for the second year in a row will use a double-elimination format.
