Bantam AA1s win state title

The Los Angeles Jr. Kings’ Bantam AA1 team celebrated a California Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) Tier II state championship today after its 2-0 victory over OC Hockey Club 1 at Ice Station Valencia.

With the win, the Jr. Kings secured a berth to the USA Hockey Tier II 14U National Championships, which will be showcased from April 2-6 in Hackensack, N.J.

The team, coached by Brandon Convery, began the tournament on Friday with a 3-1 victory over OC Hockey Club 1, and followed that up with a 4-1 triumph over Anaheim Jr. Ducks 1 later in the day.

The Bantams head to nationals with an impressive 45-4-4 record.

"That's something most teams at any level never experience, and capping it off by winning states is special," said Convery. "I'm very happy for the kids and the parents who've sacrificed a lot to achieve what they've done this year."

The Jr. Kings qualified for states after finishing with a 2-0 record at playdowns last month with wins over San Jose Jr. Sharks 1 (7-2) and OC Hockey Club 1 (4-0) at Iceoplex-Simi Valley.

The top four teams after playdowns - the California Wave also qualified - advanced to the state tournament, which used a double-elimination format.

The Jr. Kings program will send four teams to this year’s USA Hockey National Championships: 18U AAA, 16U AAA Major, 14U AAA Major (all to be contested from April 2-6 in Green Bay, Wis.) and Bantam AA1.

"Now we'll get ready for the next challenge at nationals, which this group of kids deserves," Convery added.
