Bantam AA1s open states 2-0

The Los Angeles Jr. Kings’ Bantam AA1 team opened the California Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) boys Tier II state championships, which are being contested this weekend (March 14-16) at Ice Station Valencia, with a 2-0 record.

The team, coached by Brandon Convery, began the tournament on Friday with a 3-1 victory over OC Hockey Club 1, and followed that up with a 4-1 triumph over Anaheim Jr. Ducks 1 later in the day.

In Game 3, the Jr. Kings will take on either the Jr. Ducks (1-1) or OC Hockey Club (1-1) on Saturday (4:10 p.m.). A win would secure the club a state championship and berth to the USA Hockey Tier II 14U National Championships, which will be showcased from April 2-6 in Hackensack, N.J.

The Jr. Kings qualified for states after finishing with a 2-0 record at playdowns last month with wins over San Jose Jr. Sharks 1 (7-2) and OC Hockey Club 1 (4-0) at Iceoplex-Simi Valley.

The top four teams after playdowns - the California Wave also qualified - advanced to the state tournament, which is using a double-elimination format.
