16U, Bantam Minors celebrate Tier I state titles

At this year’s California Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) state championships, which were contested last weekend (Feb. 6-8) at The Rinks-Lakewood Ice, the Los Angeles Jr. Kings’ 16U AAA Minor and Bantam Minor teams celebrated titles in their respective divisions.

The 16U Minor team bested the San Jose Jr. Sharks, 3 games to 2, in their best-of-three series, winning the deciding game on Sunday by a 4-2 count.

The Bantam Minors swept their three-game series against San Jose, culminating in a 4-3 triumph in Game 2 on Saturday.

The Jr. Kings’ Bantam Major squad punched its ticket to the Pacific District Regional Tournament, which will be contested from March 5-8 at Sharks Ice-San Jose, after finishing runner-up to the Anaheim Jr. Ducks in its division. L.A. fell to Anaheim, 2-1, in the title game on Sunday.

In the 18U AAA bracket, the Jr. Kings finished with a 1-2 mark, falling to the Ontario Avalanche in their final game on Saturday, 2-1.

L.A.’s 16U Major squad wrapped up states with a 2-2 record, losing to the Jr. Ducks, 1-0, in the finale on Sunday.

In the Pee Wee division, the Jr. Kings’ Major squad went 0-2 with losses to the Golden State Elite Eagles (2-1 in overtime on Friday) and Jr. Ducks (6-0 on Saturday), while the Minor team finished with a 2-1 mark with a victory over the Jr. Ducks (3-1 on Friday) and defeats on Saturday at the hands of Golden State (3-0) and Anaheim (4-2).

The top two teams in the Midget 18U and Bantam Major brackets advance districts (the Jr. Sharks had auto-bids to districts in the 18U and Bantam Major divisions and didn’t participate at states). Only the championship team in the Midget 16U Major division advances to districts.

In the Midget 18U, 16U Major, Bantam Major and Pee Wee Major divisions, the top four teams in each division in CAHA regular-season play qualified for state playoffs, which for the third year in a row used a double-elimination format.
